Science Week showcased

Central Queensland University will celebrate a preview to Science Week at the Central Queensland Multicultural Fair and CQU Open Day on 11 August.

The University’s faculties will join with government organisations and community groups to showcase science at work in the region, as well as the world’s great scientific discoveries.

CQU’s Faculty of Arts, Health and Sciences will lead the way with laboratory displays where visitors will get the chance to have “hands-on” experiences with chemistry and biology.

The Rockhampton Hospital’s intensive care unit, in conjunction with the School of Nursing and Health Studies, will be displaying a fully functional and interactive Intensive Care bed complete with patient and machinery. “Mock” cardiac arrests and various emergency situations will be staged so visitors can see Critical Care nurses at work. The Faculty of Education and Creative Arts are planning a Science education showcase titled “Science Through the Ages”, incorporating poster-size tabloid pages on the great discoveries in science. The Performing Arts students will also be supporting this with colourful, dramatic scenes of great moments in time.

CQU’s Community Relations Officer Priscilla Crighton said science groups operating in the region are encouraged to take part in this outstanding event.

“The CQ Multicultural Fair and CQU Open Day draws up to 30,000 people each year. It’s co-hosted by ABC Capricornia, which broadcasts from the event, and is supported by The Morning Bulletin. It’s a great opportunity for government bodies and community groups to get the word out to the media and tell the community what they are doing in science,” she said.
