Rocky career choice expands from coal and cattle to computers

Rockhampton region needs more than miners and cowboys so there's plenty of opportunities in the local information and communications technology (ICT) sector.

That's according to Associate Professor Greg Whymark, one of the organisers of a free ICT Careers Fair due at CQUniversity Rockhampton on Monday, July 26.

School students are encouraged to attend between 11am-1pm and all residents are welcome from 5.30pm-8.30pm. Details are via 13CQUni (13 27 86) and school visits can be arranged via fabie-marketing@cqu.edu.au .

Organisers have arranged ICT sector speakers from the government, commercial and education fields who are keen to chat about job opportunities.

"These days ICT needs workers with people skills and business know-how and not just those with a knack for software," Professor Whymark said.

The ICT Careers fair is part of the national ICT Careers Week and is organised by the local chapter of the Australian Computer Society and local IT industry, with CQUniversity.
