Female science students discover CQU
Published on 16 May, 2005
Around 60 budding female science and technology students converged at Central Queensland University Mackay Campus on May 13-14.
Girls In For Technology and Science (GIFTS) is an interactive hands-on conference that enables female students to pursue their interests in science, engineering and technology.
The event kicked off with presentations from faculty representatives who gave students information regarding courses that CQU Mackay offers in science, engineering and information technology.
There was a welcome dinner held at Souths League’s Club. One highlight from the evening was a recorded passage from the famous 'Dr Karl' who reinforced the importance of girls studying science.
Day 2 program highlights represented a biology discussion on the human brain, identifying worms and other living organisms through a microscope, building a stoppable force on water to stop marbles, and an interactive multimedia presentation.
“The conference enabled students to experience science, engineering and technology and hopefully will assist in their future study direction,” GIFTS University Coordinator Vivien Clift said.
Year 11 students travelled from Bowen, Collinsville, Calen, Moranbah and Sarina to join local Mackay students for the two-day conference.
The Centre for Excellence in Science, Maths and Technology at Pioneer State High School facilitated the event in conjunction with CQU Mackay.
