Mayor throws support behind dual-sector uni plan

Mayor of Rockhampton Regional Council, Cr Brad Carter has thrown his full support behind CQUniversity's bid to amalgamate with CQ TAFE.

Mayor Carter sent a letter to Premier Anna Bligh earlier this week seeking her influence within both Queensland and federal governments.

Cr Carter said the letter highlighted the many benefits amalgamation of the higher education facilities would bring to the region.

"The collaboration of CQUniversity and CQ TAFE is widely supported by community as it will deliver better short and long term higher education outcomes to our underserved community," Mayor Carter said.

"It will also enable our region to attract and retain skills so desperately required, and meet the needs of local employers which will lead to the creation of sustainable jobs.

"It is a bold and innovative move that CQUniversity Professor Scott Bowman and CQIT Director Nik Babovic are making and I wish them both the best in progressing this $80m project."
