Des Ryan - Companion of the University
Published on 24 September, 2008
Des Ryan has become an inspiration for many people because of the way he has risen above his disability after suffering a spinal injury at the age of 14 which left him a partial C3 quadriplegic and wheelchair bound.
Despite having no movement in his arms or legs and only limited movement in his fingers that allows him to operate a wheelchair, Mr Ryan has been a pioneer in the provision and improvement of services for the disabled both at CQUniversity and the wider community over a very long period.
Mr Ryan's role as a public spokesperson on disability issues has done much to raise public awareness of disability issues in the community and ensure the provision of appropriate services and facilities.
As a student of this University in the mid 90's, Mr Ryan worked closely with the Disabilities Officer to improve access to those with disabilities resulting in the University's first ‘Guide for Students with Disabilities' which he co-authored. This practical guide listed the types of services available and important contacts and helped facilitate wider access to a university education for many following him.
As well as taking a leadership role with community-based disability organisations, such as the Spinal Injuries Association and the Rockhampton Home Support Association, Des has developed a strong interest in information technology and has pursued a successful career in this area. As the Information Communications Technology Coordinator for ‘Community Employment Options Inc', Des now coordinates all ICT systems and services for this large Queensland regional multi-site business.
