Tax help program at CQU Sydney
Published on 15 December, 2004
CQU Sydney International Campus students, in conjunction with the campus Training, Employment and Careers Coaching (TECC) function and the Australian Tax Office (ATO), established their first ‘Tax Help Centre’ this year.
Volunteers consisted of graduates and current students (working from an office set up on campus).
Tax Help Centre volunteers were trained over four days by the ATO in how to complete (perform) tax returns. They then applied their training to assist other students. This service was free of charge.
Appreciation and recognition was echoed by the ATO staff, Charmaine Crocker and Kathy Seton.
Kim Hwang CPA added her support to that of personnel from the ATO and the CQU Sydney campus director.
The exercise led to personal and professional growth for participating students, who gained valuable skills that will make them more marketable to employers while studying and upon graduation.
In line with CQU’s dedication to “Doctrina Perpetua” or continuous learning, participants took advantage of the opportunity to enhance customer service, communication and organisational skills, in addition to learning how to complete tax returns.
Participating students and many of their peers have already expressed interest in helping again next year. It is anticipated this program will expand during 2005.
Julie MacColl, Co-ordinator (TECC), was congratulated by the Manager, TECC, on setting up this project and seeing it through to a successful conclusion.
