Student advisor coordinator applauded

Meet Meagan Johnson, Student Advisor Coordinator at Sydney Campus, who enjoys mixing work and pleasure, whether in the world of business, community relations or customer service.

As Student Advisor Coordinator, Meagan is responsible for maintaining and monitoring student performance and assisting those who are having difficulty studying. She can refer students to the Learning Skills Unit or Library staff, depending on the nature of the case concerned.

Students need not be afraid or embarrassed. Once they are given special attention and begin to show improvement they can quickly ‘graduate' from their ‘at risk' status.

"It's all a matter of early intervention", Meagan says. "The more quickly we address their study problems and find a solution, the sooner they can ‘come off' the support programme".

A Sutherland Shire girl by birth, Meagan grew up in the surfing suburb of Cronulla. She went on to attend MLC School, excelling in mathematics in the HSC. During her time at school Meagan was involved in extracurricular activities and returned to choreograph several school productions after finishing high school.

After her school education Meagan quickly gained some secretarial and bookkeeping skills and put them to good use as a personal assistant with the big property management firm, L.J. Hooker.

In the 1990s she jetted about the world as a flight attendant and cabin manager with Ansett Australia, visiting a number of world capitals. Ansett was the official airline for the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and during this time Meagan was privileged to meet many famous people including former Beatles Paul McCartney and the late George Harrison as well as a number of Olympians.

Over the years Meagan has successfully run her own business, practicing remedial massage and homeopathy as well as teaching dance. However, it was her search for greater financial security which eventually led to a full time position in the Student Services Unit with CQU's Sydney Campus.

In 2007 Meagan snatched a Gold Mort Award for her community and fund raising activities. In addition to her advisory and marketing roles Meagan was a founding member of the Environmental Committee at Sydney Campus and recently helped to organise CQUniversity Sydney's participation in the Eastern Suburbs ‘Relay for Life' event, raising over $1500 for the Cancer Council.

Meagan's current enthusiasm is organising student community engagement activities and producing the new bi monthly electronic ‘Sydney Newsletter' which contains a calendar of current events, news and quiz trivia, centred on the Sydney Campus....
