Arts patron made Companion of University

Helene Jones OAM has long been a staunch supporter of the performing arts in Rockhampton and rarely misses a performance.
She is a patron and member of a large number of community organisations and groups. These include the Rockhampton Youth Orchestra, the Chamber Music Society, the Rockhampton Musical Union Youth Choir, the Rockhampton Eisteddfod Association, and the Capricornia Silver Band – to name but a few.
She is a foundation member of the Pilbeam Theatre, the Rockhampton Art Gallery, and the State Library of Queensland.
Helene’s own musical talent is of a high order and she shares this most readily, giving delight to many. However her greatest joy is in fostering the talents of others, encouraging them to continue to improve, and rewarding their efforts through the many prizes she has personally paid for.
The University has benefited enormously through having Helene as a friend. She is a regular attendee at graduation ceremonies and other official functions, and has been a strong contributor to the CQU Foundation.
Helene’s contributions have not been unrecognised. In 1996, she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to community music, particularly through the Rockhampton Chamber Music Society, choirs and arts organisations. In 1987, the Queensland Recreation Council awarded her its Achievement Award, and in 1989 she was Rockhampton’s Citizen of the Year.
At the weekend CQU Rockhampton graduation ceremony, the University recognised Helene’s many years of distinguished contribution to the cultural life of Rockhampton and thanked her for her continued valued support of the University.
