Nicholas works on software for hard-hat industry

Unlike many involved in the coal industry, Nicholas Harris has chosen to work with software rather than larger-scale machines.

The Bachelor of Information Technology (Co-op) student is on an industry placement - as part of his degree - working as a coal chain analyst with Mackay-based Integrated Logistics Company Ptd Ltd.

"I've been learning how to utilize my skills in a team environment while gaining 'real world' knowledge and more hands-on experience," he said.

"I'm working on the first release of a piece of software that has been in development since the beginning of ILCo about 12 months ago. The future will involve maintenance and administration of the software in production."

Nicholas said he tried to get out on the golf course a couple of times a week, despite his full-time job and study load, but did not have much time for anything else.

"My degree is very close to being finished though so I will have a lot more free time once I eventually finish," he said.

Nicholas said he did not have the OP results to choose architecture when leaving school.

"However, I realized that most of my free time when I wasn't playing golf was spent tinkering with computers, so I decided on an IT degree."
