There is no reason why girls can't make their mark in IT, according to CQUniversity's 2008 Women in Information Technology scholarship winner.

First-year Bachelor of Information Technology student, from Yeppoon, Renee McCall said she has always found IT easy to understand and very enjoyable.

"I chose IT as a career path because I enjoy the challenge it provides. Technology and computers are continually changing and no matter how good you are you can never know everything," Renee explained.

"IT is a male-dominated field and it is particularly noticeable at university which is a shame. There is no reason for girls not to get involved in this field, particularly with scholarships like the Women in Information Technology one which makes it a whole lot easier."

Renee hasn't yet decided what area of IT which she would eventually like to work in, but she says she is enjoying programming and hardware set-ups at the moment.

Renee, who just completed Year 12 at Rockhampton Grammar School last year, has recently deferred her studies for 6 months to get some on-the-job work experience. She is currently the IT officer for Dynamic Satellite Surveys, a Yeppoon-based company that specializes in satellite technology for positioning services.

The Women in Information Technology scholarship is an annual $5000 prize for an enrolling female IT student at CQUniversity demonstrating high academic achievement, a keen interest in the field and a desire to pursue a career in IT. The prize is sponsored by CQUniversity's Faculty of Business and Informatics.
