CQU adjusts spending

Central Queensland University will gradually reduce operating costs to match a decrease in student enrolments, it was announced today at a university-wide staff forum.

"A number of other regional universities are facing the same issue particularly in resource-rich locations where high salaries and plentiful jobs are attracting potential students directly to the full-time workforce. That's the reality and we need to respond to that," explained CQU Deputy Vice-Chancellor Angela Delves.

All universities are funded according to the number of students enrolled. Since 2006 CQU student enrolment decreased by an estimated 15 %. CQU, therefore, will evaluate operating costs and find efficiencies accordingly.

The University is embarking on a significant reengineering project to:

  • - Upgrade services to students whilst reducing duplication across the university
  • - Enhance marketing initiatives to prospective students
  • - Increase its use of information technology
  • - Overhaul human resources development and realign staffing levels

The University will focus on training and developing of permanent staff to take up more technologically-driven positions, whilst decreasing its reliance on contract and casual staff.

This follows an ongoing review of operations at CQU to deliver better community and student services, create new programs and ensure the University's long-term viability. Last year CQU's five faculties were strategically realigned into three Faculties.

CQU's new marketing initiatives will progressively be rolled out during 2007/08.
