Coinciding with National Science Week, Central Queensland University Bundaberg held a SCINEMA night recently featuring locals from Bundaberg.
SCINEMA was a showcase of films bringing you the human side of science. The first film titled “Nerves of Steel” looked at the Australian Institute of Sport’s scientific program to create a champion Skeleton racing team for the 2006 Winter Olympics. Bundaberg athlete, Michelle Steele, was one of the racers featured in the film and her family, Bruce, Janet and Helen Steele were able to attend the program.
Skeleton is a head-first, full-throttle slide down a winding, icy track and is one of the most dangerous and demanding olympic sports.
Central Queensland University, Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Health Sub-Dean, Desirae Kirby said that “Nerves of Steel” showed how the Australian Institute of Sport used a range of sciences to create a champion. Biomechanics, physiology, sports psychology and physics all played a part in the creation of the skeleton team. “It was great to have Michelle’s family attend the program. They were more than happy to give us an update of Michelle’s progress,” said Ms Kirby.
The program also featured several short ExperiMental films starring the ABC’s Surfing Scientist and former Bundaberg boy, Ruben Meerman.
