Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Miles bobs up again in UN role 

Professor Bob Miles may be leaving CQUniversity at the end of the year but he has acknowledged he is "going from the frying pan to the fire" in terms of work commitments.

He will continue to be based in Rockhampton, while travelling for various projects.

"I will be working primarily with the UN (United Nations Department of Economic and Social affairs) on the effects of Climate Change on Government and Governance and the poverty environmental nexus in the Asia Pacific," he said.

"My second role is doing some work with Aus Aid as a technical Advisor on Regional Development."

Professor Miles said he also had a range of other consultancy roles throughout Australia lined up.

The respected academic is stepping down as Executive Director of CQUniversity's Institute for Sustainable Regional Development.

Professor Miles said the ISRD's record of success during his leadership was due to a very dedicated team - particularly Karen Chapman, Jodie Guthrie, Lindsay Greer and Susan Kinnear - and the support of the Deans (past and present).

This success has included 145 invited guest speaker presentations (nationally and internationally); 161 media and press statements; 127 CQUniversity staff involved in ISRD projects (all faculties); 156 projects successfully completed; a project portfolio valued at over $6.7 million; $1.2 million in funds from State Development; $20 million in external partnerships; and the generation of 131 publications, books, journal and technical reports.

Professor Miles said he would leave with pride in his internal roles which have included (at various times): President of Academic Board; Foundation chair of the Bio Safety Committee; Chair of the Appeals Committee; Chair of the Research Committee of Academic Board; a member of the Senior Appointments Committee; Chair of the Regional Centre of the Arts; a member of the Awards and Ceremonial Committee; a member of the University Council and Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Academic).

The active academic has also had external roles including: Chairman of the Central Queensland Forestry Committee; Chair of the State Reference Panel (and other roles) for the Queensland Government Blue-Print for the Bush; Foundation partner and stakeholder in the DEST International Centre of Excellence in Water Management; Foundation project team member of the ARC network on Integrated Spatial systems; Foundation member and program leader of the Queensland Government Smart Water Initiative; Convener of goverance workshop at the UN Headquarters in Vienna for the 7th Global Forum on Engaged Government;  Senior Consulting Specialist to the UN on the Poverty Environmental Nexus in Central and Southern Asia; International Specialist for the Central Government of China on the economic development of the Gansu Province; Foundation member Environmental Management Advisory Committee on Shoalwater Bay Training Area; Organizing committee for 5 national conferences, one international conference and 2 state conferences; Chair of the CEO's Industry Committee on air quality for Gladstone; Member of the CQ Water Supply Strategy; Review of the arrangements and policy options for Natural Resources Management in Queensland (NRM green paper); Board Member Fitzroy Basin Association; Risk Assessment for the Local Government Association of Queensland on Climate change and Local Government; Strategic Issues Paper on the cumulative effects of mining in Queensland for the Minerals Council of Australia.
