Graduate needs surgery but prolongs rugby career to tour USA

Civil Engineering graduate and keen sportsman Simon Steinhofer has fully recovered since undergoing surgery on a separated AC shoulder injury in late 2006 and is now looking forward to representing Queensland's Outback Barbarians on their tour of Amercia's west coast in April this year.

He is among several CQU graduates on the team, which is supported by the University via the Office of Development and Graduate Relations.

Simon studied a Bachelor of Civil Engineering (First Class Honours) and a Diploma in Professional Practice (Second Class Honours) through the Co-Op Program based in the Rockhampton Campus and graduated in 2007.

He has been working with the CARDNO Pty Ltd Rockhampton office (a civil engineering consultancy firm) since June 2006 due to links made during the Co-op element of his degree.

Through his time with Cardno he has worked on a number of different projects (such as the Rockhampton to Yeppoon water pipeline), assisted on a number of large urban developments in the Rockhampton area and also has been seconded to the Rockhampton Regional Council as a development engineer.

"The link between the sporting field and the office is noticeable when it comes to planning, dedication, enthusiasm and leadership which are vital in both areas," he says.

Simon first started playing Rugby Union in 2001 for Whitsunday Anglican School and went on to play for CQU's under-19 team in 2004.

"We were premiers that year with only 1 loss and 1 draw," he said.

"I played my first Open grade game for Wollongbar Alstonville Rugby Club in 2005. Wollongbar Alstonville  Rugby club are part of the Far North Coast Rugby Competition in NSW.

"I've played for CQU in the A Grade side in 2006 but I suffered a class 4 separated AC shoulder joint late in the season which required surgery.

"I recovered from the surgery in late 2006 to play in the CQU A-Grade rugby side and we were 2007 A-Grade Premiers of the Rockhampton & District Rugby Union competition."

Simon was also part of the 2008 Open Rockhampton Brahmans side and was subsequently elected in the Queensland Outback Barbarians Rugby side to tour the west coast of the USA.
