CQUni looks to Asia for fresh perspective on community engagement

CQUniversity this week welcomed Professor Saran Kaur Gill, Engagement Australia's Visiting Scholar from The National University of Malaysia.
In a visit organised by the Office of Community and Engagement, Prof Gill led presentations in Bundaberg, Rockhampton and Mackay on 'Leading Community Engagement at an Institutional Level' and 'ASEAN Perspectives on Engagement: Highlighting Models and Best-Practice'.
These presentations were conducted as professional development opportunities.
Prof Gill is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Industry and Community Partnerships) at The National University of Malaysia (known locally as the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia UKM). She is responsible for developing respectful and mutually beneficial partnerships between her university, industry and foundations, NGOs and communities, and government agencies. In recognition of her efforts in strengthening Australian-Malaysian education relationships, she received the inaugural award of 'Education Personality of the Year' from the Australian High Commission in 2011.
UKM hosts the secretariat of two networks- the Asia-Talloires Network of Industry and Community Engaged Universities (ATNEU) and the ASEAN University Network's Thematic Network on University Social Responsibility and Sustainability (AUN USR&S). In addition, UKM works collaboratively with the ASEAN Secretariat and the Ministry of Youth and Sports to lead in the development and implementation of the ASEAN Youth Volunteer Program (AYVP). All three entities work in partnership across ASEAN and Asia through the regional alliance called 'Asia Engage'.
