Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Free seminar looks at prevention of coerced sex 

People throughout Queensland will have access to a free research seminar presented by an international expert on the prevention of sexual abuse, Associate Professor Moira Carmody.

Dr Carmody's talk is being arranged by the Queensland Centre for Domestic and Family Violence Research, based at CQUniversity Mackay.

The seminar will run from 9.30am to 10.30am on Friday (October 29). It is free of charge but registration is required as places are limited at all sites. Details regarding video-linked sites and how to register can be found on CDFVR's website http://www.noviolence.com.au/

Dr Carmody, from the University of Western Sydney's Centre for Educational Research, was a member of the National Council to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children and took a leading role in developing national policy on respectful relationship education in schools and other youth settings.

The presenter has worked for nearly 30 years on violence prevention as a counsellor, researcher and educator.  Her most recent research and violence prevention program on working with young people Sex + Ethics: young people and ethical sex and Sex + Ethics: the sexual ethics program for young people was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2009. \

The seminar, titled Educating young people about ethical and respectful relationships, is one in a continuing program of free research seminars offered by the Queensland Centre for Domestic and Family Violence.

This presentation will explore the work Dr Carmody has been doing with young people since the late 1990s to find alternative ways to prevent sexual assault, pressured and coerced sex.

Dr Carmody will discuss the origins of the Sex+ Ethics Violence Prevention Education Program and the research that underpins its development, implementation and evaluation. The program will be outlined and the response to date of young people from Queensland, NSW and New Zealand will be discussed.

CDFVR Director Heather Nancarrow, said the research seminar program aimed to bring relevant research to the domestic and family violence prevention field to support the development of policy and best practice.
