UniGym undergoes expansion to meet community needs

Central Queensland University’s UniGym is undergoing a massive expansion of its floor space and fitness facilities to accommodate for its growing community, staff and student use.

The gym’s floor space will be expanded by about 45%, allowing for improved aerobic and equipment layout, including the 10 new fitness machines that are proving popular with members.

New modern amenities are also being built and a new paved access to the facilities is being constructed from the main carpark off the Bruce Highway.

There will also be better access between the UniGym and pool area and the Community Sports Centre allowing cross-use of both amenities during major events.

A new teaching lab for up-and-coming physical education teachers is also under construction within the UniGym complex.

The new facilities are scheduled for completion by the end of January, 2007.

The expansion and refurbishment of these facilities are part of bigger plans that includes upcoming improvements to the Community Sports Centre and tennis and netball courts, and completed upgrades to the covered basketball/hockey courts.

The refurbishments are tipped to encourage major sporting teams and athletes to use these facilities as their base while in the region.
