Uni sponsors high school business competition

CQUniversity was a major sponsor of the recent Isis District State High School Australian Business Week (ABW) activities and competition.

Eight teams of 10 were formed and each group was in charge of running and making business decisions for a virtual 200-room hotel/motel.

Assessment tasks for the week included making a video advert, preparing a trade display, developing company reports and giving an oral presentation.

Each of the students who participated in ABW received one point towards their Queensland Certificate of Education.

Bundaberg STEPS (preparatory program) representatives Trixie James and Karen Seary ran a 'well-received' 30-minute report writing workshop for Year 11 students participating in ABW.

University marketing's Mandy Finch helped to judge the students' tradeshow displays and her colleague Chantal Bewick represented the campus during the sponsors' luncheon.

"Each group had to produce marketing material, a trade display, appropriate themes and slogans and logos for their hotels.  It was a great day and the students love being able to dress up and present their ideas to external stakeholders," Mandy said.

Meanwhile, Bundaberg Campus' Ron Bishop, our Senior Lecturer in Aviation, was the ABW event's guest speaker, addressing "what business is".

Mr Bishop said the Isis District students found the week beneficial due to the hands-on and real-world experience. He said participants in the presentation session enjoyed an excellent meal prepared by hospitality students.

"I am really proud to be a part of the students learning about business," he said.

"Principal Trevor French and his team at Isis District State High School did an excellent job teaching their students about business and exposing them to the requirements to run a business successfully."
