Work experience inspires science career

A week of work experience in the James Goldston Faculty of Engineering and Physical Systems in Rockhampton has helped year 10 student Christine Dunbavan make up her mind about a career in science.
The Glenmore State High School student said she’d had a great week in the Faculty and had enjoyed all the activities she’d been involved in.
Staff aimed to give Christine a taste of many of the different aspects involved in a career in science.
“I’ve put together electronic kits for use in teaching, helped set up labs and spent time in the mechanic shop,” said Christine.
Christine also spent one of the nights during the week helping Faculty staff conduct an astronomy class for a group of Brownies.
“There was about 25 eight-year olds at the session. They were a little wild, but it was really lots of fun,” she said.
Electronics was the area she enjoyed the most and said she hoped to study it further after finishing school.
Christine, who will be choosing her senior subjects shortly, said she’d already decided she was going to do Physics in years 11 and 12. “I’ll need it if I’m going to continue on in this area,” she said.
