Graduate and band conductor in one year

It has only been 6 months since former music teacher John Evenhuis graced the graduation stage in a career changing moment, and this week he will return in a new role...

After working as a teacher in the Central Highlands for 18 years, John, aged 44, completed an MBA in Human Resource Management and graduated earlier this year.

John Evenhuis returns to graduation.
Since completing his studies he has been working as a recruitment specialist for IPA in Emerald.

“I had been looking for a new challenge and HR seemed a great fit for the previous skills that I had acquired as an educator,” John said.

Despite leaving his music teaching career, John still has a real passion for his music and will conduct the Capricornia Silver Brass Band at this year’s graduation ceremony.

John has performed with the band since 1998 and has just been appointed as the Musical Director.

Although he won’t be part of the contingent of graduates this week, he has vivid memories of his time just 6 months ago.

He said it was the sense of achievement, self-fulfillment and community spirit that is experienced, that makes graduation so special.

“There will also be a sense of authority to go and utilize the achieved skills and a sense of sadness that the course had been completed.”
