Seeing is believing - words of inspiration for Uni

CQUniversity's Office of Development and Graduate Relations (ODGR) recently hosted a visitor from The Fred Hollows Foundation: Sue Larsen, State Fundraising Manager for Queensland.

The Fred Hollows Foundation is one of the organisations which staff have chosen to support through the University's new Workplace Giving program, which was launched this year.

Sue provided the ODGR team with some interesting insights into the history of the organisation. There was a great opportunity for the development office to ask questions about the fundraising strategies of this successful organisation that received $25 million in donations in 2009. These funds allowed the organisation to restore sight to 195,408 people, and to train 5878 eye health workers.

As recognition of the new partnership, Sue Larsen presented the University with a book, Seeing is believing, which relates the incredible story of the Foundation and the man behind it.

Sue Larsen was in Rockhampton to launch an exhibition. "In Fred's Footsteps" is showing at Rockhampton Regional Council Library in Bolsover Street, from May 5 to 21.

The exhibition showcases the life and work of an amazing man - Dr Fred Hollows.  The Fred Hollows Foundation is dedicated to eradicating avoidable blindness in Indigenous Australians, as well as internationally.

Well known for his passion and determination to provide access to health care for everyone, Dr Hollows was also a tireless campaigner for the Indigenous population. He set up an Indigenous program that, in addition to the provision of eye treatments, has literacy, nutrition and women's development strategies.

In 1985, Fred was offered an Order of Australia, which he refused due to the state of Aboriginal health in this country.
