Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Postgrad students and supervisors recognised 

The Postgraduate Students' Organisation (PSO) has awarded prizes and certificates to recognise the achievements of students and supervisors in 2005.

Awards announced at a special lunch at CQU Rockhampton on Friday (January 27) included:.

AHS - Supervisor winner, A/Prof Kerry Walsh. AHS - Supervisor runner-ups, Prof Lesley Warner; A/Prof Steve McKillup; Dr Lorna Moxham, Prof David Midmore. AHS - Student excellence winner, Sohail Qureshi.

The awards were designed to recognise and reward research higher degree students and their supervisors for their contribution to the research culture and research community at CQU.

Students were judged on their contribution to university research committees and promotional events (e.g. open day), and ability to raise the research profile of the university (publications, conferences, industry liason, news articles).

The award criteria for supervisors included how involved they were with students, colleagues and projects outside of their own work, and their enthusiasm, accessibility and motivation for their students.

Student winners received $100 gift vouchers. Supervisor winners received a gift voucher and desk gift set. Runners-up received a gift set. All winners/nominees received a certificate.

PhotoID:2758 The PSO would also like to say thanks to the Associate Deans Research and/or faculty research committees for helping judge the awards, and the Student Association for funding them (and the lunch).

The PSO will be re-forming for 2006 in the next month or two. Students who are interested in joining the executive committee should contact the secretary, Paris Guest (p.guest@cqu.edu.au) to find out the first scheduled meeting for the year.
