CQU earmarks $8 million for construction of new campus library

Central Queensland University has approved construction of a new CQU Mackay library estimated to cost $8 million.

CQU Vice-Chancellor Professor John Rickard said the building will meet the expectations for campus growth over at least the next decade.

"Construction of this new library facility will satisfy both the short-term space needs and the long-term vision for the campus," Professor Rickard said.

Nationals Federal MP for Dawson De-Anne Kelly said the Commonwealth had chipped in $2.2 million for the project which will address the shortage of library space for users, information services, materials and staff.

“It will enable the library to adequately support the specialised learning needs of music students, scholars, and post-graduate research students,” Mrs Kelly said.

Head of Campus Professor Phillip Clift said the existing library facility will be converted for use as staff accommodation, tutorial rooms and some postgraduate student accommodation.

“The proposed building will provide a focus for learning support on campus by including accommodation for library staff, specialist and general library collections, individual and group study spaces, timetabled and non-timetabled computer laboratories, student support staff and information technology staff,” Professor Clift said.

PhotoID:3614 Library Manager Pauline McNee said the new multi-purpose library would enhance: 7 The teaching and learning environment.

7 Co-ordinated delivery of services for students.

7 Future development of a proposed Science & Technology Precinct.

7 Community involvement.

7 Access to IT facilities for students from lower socio-economic groups.

7 Provision of a 'centre' to the campus.
