CQU Library getting clean and green
Published on 12 December, 2002
Central Queensland University Library has implemented some sustainable practices as part of the University’s Clean and Green approach to its operations.
The Library’s environmental officer Kelli Graham said boxes and paper were being recycled, books were recycled or sold, computers were used until they were unrepairable and printer cartridges were re-used.
She said in regards to energy awareness, Library computers were either shutdown automatically or were regularly shutdown by staff. Natural light was used where accessible and most lights were turned off at night. Air conditioners were on two-hourly timers.
Kelli is the contact for Greening CQU at the Library and will monitor the effectiveness of current environmental practices in the library. She will also be the person staff can turn to in regard to “green” ideas and suggestions.
Greening CQU is aiming to identity and acknowledge any activities across all schools and divisions at the campus that are committed to environmental best practice.
“We’re working to identify and promote green practices that we, the University, could integrate into existing campus wide management strategies, and to identify areas where we can switch to sustainable alternatives,” explained Chaplain and coordinator of Greening CQU, Matthew Quaife-Ryan.
