Rocky researcher offers food for thought in free public talk

CQUniversity's Dr Karena Burke will present a free talk about the effects of food additives and food intolerances on health and behaviour, from 6pm-7pm at the Ginger Mule Tapas Bar (William St, Rockhampton) on Thursday July 31.
The postdoctoral research fellow will present the informal discussion-based session as part of the University's Healthy Communities ‘Research Unplugged' sessions.
A selection of finger foods will be provided. If you are attending and to assist with catering, please RSVP before July 28 to Dr James Douglas (j.douglas@cqu.edu.au or 4930 9371).
Dr Burke will explain how current concepts of healthy eating targeted at the general public and school children alike do not accommodate the differences in the ways individuals with food intolerances conceptualise healthy food, eating and nutrition.
"The reactions of children and adults to both natural and artificial food chemicals is explored and it is argued that a re-examination of the concepts that drive our understanding of healthy eating and nutrition is necessary in order to promote awareness, understanding, and social inclusion for these individuals," she said.
