CQU Library delivers top services

Comparative data has been released from surveys undertaken by 36 Australian and New Zealand university libraries over the past three years.

Of the 16 libraries surveyed in 2003, CQU was one of only three not to record a client expectation/performance gap of greater than 1.50. Any gap greater than 2 is considered significant. CQU Library only had two variables with gaps greater than 1.

PhotoID:1338 CQU attained four of the top five performance scores out of all variables over all three years.

It was the only library to be rated in the top five performing libraries of 2003 in each of the five survey categories - Communication, Service Quality, Service Delivery, Facilities & Equipment and Library Staff.

The survey, administered by Rodski Behavioural Research Group, found when benchmarked against the other university libraries, CQU Library created a new high for service quality. The Library also rated highly in other categories, peaking marginally below the highest scores.

The Library significantly improved its overall position, since the last survey, by moving into the top quartile of all libraries surveyed.

CQU Library received over 1900 responses compared with just over 700 responses in 2001, providing a confidence level of 99% +-3%.

The survey included all CQU students using library resources at all Australian campus libraries.

Six of the 10 most important variables for clients related to library staff with the remainder focusing on the collection and access to resources. The 10 highest performing variables all related to the attitudes, skills and professionalism of staff.

The two main areas of improvement identified in the survey were the adequacy of the collection and opening hours.

The survey will assist with planning to ensure library services are meeting the needs identified by student comments in the survey.
