New CQU Associate Professor returns home

Newly-appointed Associate Professor Cathie Sherwood has joined Central Queensland University’s Faculty of Informatics and Communication and is happy to be back home in Mackay.

"Returning to Mackay was a planned move and has been very positive. Most of my family is based here and my children now have the opportunity to get to know their relations.".

PhotoID:2214 "My family has a long history in the area as my grandfather was the Manager of Marian Mill for many years and he built one of the first houses at Seaforth. My family has farmed in the Pioneer Valley for almost 60 years.".

Cathie left her position at Griffith University to become the foundation Associate Professor in Multimedia at Central Queensland University’s Mackay campus.

"Multimedia is an exciting area, especially as technology gets smaller and more pervasive and the Internet continues to grow. I wanted to come to CQU and work with the multimedia team to further develop its reputation across all areas of teaching, research and development.".

More than 20 years ago, after travelling overseas, Cathie decided her desired career involved working with computers and, after moving to Brisbane, she developed software for schools in the Queensland Government Education Department.

She then began her academic career with Griffith University and was on staff for almost 17 years.

Some of her significant achievements while working with the Faculty of Education and then the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology included the establishment of Australia’s first multimedia research centre in 1992 and being a member of the planning team for Australia’s first multimedia degree in 1995.

PhotoID:2215 "My students over the years have won numerous awards for their multimedia products, most notably an Australian Interactive Media Industry Association (AIMIA) award, two Women in Technology (WIT) awards and second in a national web competition, as well as launches of their work by both state and federal government ministers.".

Cathie also developed a CD-ROM on Gallipoli which was launched by the Governor of Queensland in 2001 and is now being redeveloped.
