Published on 23 April, 2010
Judith Brown is a recipient of the Vice-Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence: Teacher of the Year 2009 ...
This award acknowledges Judith Brown for her sustained commitment to excellence in music and theatre performance through the development and application of novel and effective teaching strategies in studio, classroom and public performance contexts.
The performing arts requires sustained passion and commitment on the part of the performer. Judith is an accomplished musician who brings her passion for performance to her teaching to create an inspirational, innovative learning environment for students. Through her study in music performance, music education and arts administration, Judith has successfully combined her role as Senior Lecturer in Creative and Performing Arts with her doctoral studies, extending her knowledge in the discipline and applying this in her teaching practice. Judith's teaching philosophy is to inspire and motivate students to go beyond the attainment of purely technical ability within an educational context to develop their skills as professional performers and independent learners.
As a measure of her innovation in teaching, Judith initiated a series of free evening lecture-recitals in 2001 to enable students of the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music to experience live music performance as an integral part of their learning, equipping them to become successful performers, educators and lifelong learners in their chosen profession. Nine years later, these recitals continue today as an integral part of the curriculum and have become an important institution in Mackay's social and cultural life.
Through her scholarship, innovation and commitment, Judith has made a strong contribution to the quality of learning and teaching at CQUniversity and plays an important part in the University's continuing success.
