Sports teams carry CQU name to finals

Congratulations to sports teams which have proudly carried the CQU name in finals of rugby union, rugby league, soccer, hockey and AFL in recent weeks.

These teams were previously affiliated with CQU Student Association but have kept their names despite reduced CQUSA involvement in the wake of VSU.

One of the most famous victories came in the rugby union. University gained its first premiership trophy in 11 years, thanks to a 24-7 victory over Colts in the grand final at Rockhampton's Ruby Park.

The same weekend, the CQU Panthers A-grade team celebrated a breakthrough AFL Capricornia Premiership flag with a 105-83 victory over BITS Saints. Panthers had been unbeaten throughout the season.

In the hockey, CQU Wanderers thrashed Park Avenue Brothers 7-1 in the men's CQ Extended League, while the CQU Wanderers women reached the finals but lost 4-1 to Park Avenue. For the Rockhampton finals due this weekend, CQU Wanderers will face Southside in the men's league, while CQU Wanderers will face Park Avenue Brothers in the women's league.

Congratulations also to Rockhampton hockey star Aaron Harmsworth, the CQU Wanderers Al men's player-coach, who recently claimed The Morning Bulletin/Rockhampton Leagues Club Senior Sports Star for August. Harmsworth led the Queensland Country men's hockey team to its fourth consecutive national title in Mackay in August.

CQU Norths Chargers posted a thrilling 22-19 victory to win the CQ Extended League grand final over minor premiers Gladstone Brothers.

In the soccer, CQU Berserker narrowly lost (1-0) the preliminary final against Bluebirds in the top men's league. CQU Berserker also reached the preliminary final in the second division before losing 3-1 to Clinton and the preliminary final in the under-17s before losing to Frenchville.

Meanwhile, CQU has supported the Rockhampton Cycling Club's latest talent identification program, leading to 16 potential stars of the future beginning competition in the track season this month.
