Secondary students gear up for studies

Twelve budding Mackay engineers linked-up with students throughout Central Queensland University’s regional campuses over the weekend to complete activities designed to give them a taste for tertiary studies.
CQU Mackay sub-Dean for Engineering and Physical Systems Fae Martin said the satellite-linked workshops to Gladstone, Rockhampton and Bundaberg allowed the secondary students to understand the scope of the engineering profession.
“We involved about 40 students from across the campuses and the day was full of all sorts of activities that would be similar to working as an engineer,” she said.
“It also allowed our existing engineering students to share experiences they had from co-operative educational placements in the industry.” CQU graduate Jeremy Glasgow spoke about his six-month co-operative placement in the United States.
“This sort of interaction gave the students a chance to discuss issues with the peers who had undertaken Engineering co-op industry placements and those who work in the industry,” explained Ms Martin.
Mackay students were required to undertake practical activities and present solutions for problems to students in Rockhampton, Gladstone and Bundaberg.
