Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

  • Civil engineering scholarships on offer

    Two civil engineering students will benefit from a partnership arrangement between Gladstone Regional Council and CQUniversity Australia.

    The Gladstone Regional Council scholarships are aimed at addressing a civil engineering shortage across the region and are open to first-year engineering students preparing to enter their second year with CQUniversity.

  • Uni hosts function to recognise community volunteer

    CQUniversity Rockhampton hosted a function in early November to recognise the achievements of 77-year-old community worker Shirley Shannon, who recently received the 2008 Premier's Award for Queensland Seniors.

    The function attracted plenty of well-wishers, including all 5 of Shirley's proud daughters.

    Our Gold Coast International Campus students took advantage of some of the gorgeous beaches and waterways at their doorstop over the lecture break with some beach volleyball and whale watching.

    There were some dubious volleyball skills demonstrated by some of the GCIC staff followed by some excellent barbecue skills.

    CQUniversity researcher Dr Pam McGrath has released a new book designed to guide and provide a source of information for anyone diagnosed with a blood cancer.

    The National Health and Medical Research Council Senior Research Fellow, who leads the International Program of Psycho-Social Health Research (IPP-SHR) from her Brisbane base, is gaining glowing reviews for Living with Leukaemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma.

  • Scientists eager for study kick-start to kick in

    CQUniversity scientists are eager to see interest in science programs surge as word of new national incentives designed to kick-start science enrolments begins to get out.

    The government has moved maths and science subjects from the middle to the lowest HECS band from 2009 (which means those programs are not as expensive to study as others) and will refund up to 50 per cent of HECS for students who pursue a maths or science-related career on graduation.
