Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

  • CQU shares in $7 million for environmental research

    Central Queensland University (CQU) will share in a $7 million investment in a research hub for Environmental Management and Water Quality.

    The research hub, funded by the Commonwealth Environment Research Facilities (CERF) Program, is being led by the Australian National University, with other partners including the University of New South Wales, University of Western Australia, Griffith University and CQU.

    About 40 people attended the launch in Yeppoon for a new book entitled 'Community, Environment and History: Keppel Bay Case Studies'.

    The launch was held on Saturday May 26 at Krackers Bistro, Yeppoon, and was conducted by CQU Emeritus Professor Errol Payne.

    It was a who's who of Gladstone when representatives from local industry, community and education sectors met at CQU Gladstone for a community consultation on the future strategic positioning of the campus.

    Around 40 people attended the session held at CQU Gladstone last month to discuss the future direction of the campus and its relationship with the local region.

  • Scholarship helps Felicity to be more resourceful

    CQU Mackay environmental science student Felicity Olver has gained a boost thanks to a $30,000 scholarship from the Queensland Resources Council.

    Ms Olver was among 5 students to receive a QRC scholarship presented at the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy New Leaders Conference at the end of April.

  • Koala researcher featured on National Geographic News, worldwide radio and podcasts

    CQU koala researcher Dr Alistair Melzer is featured on the National Geographic News website and the related Pulse of the Planet radio podcasts and broadcasts (presented by the National Science Foundation) to over 309 public and commercial stations around the world.

    His reports on the koalas of St Bees Island, off the coast of Mackay, are even reaching the Voice of America and the Armed Forces Radio Network.

    Special guests, past students and new bands of the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music (CQCM) are gearing up for a 'Jazz Extravaganza' which guarantees to be a feast of variety and entertainment for Mackay music lovers.

    Lecturer from the Jazz Department at CQCM, Derrin Kerr is helping students get their acts together, polishing already formed ensembles as well as fine-tuning new groups for their performance on Friday, May 11, at the CQCM theatre.
