Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

  • Visiting professor focuses on kids affected by domestic violence

    CQU, in conjunction with the Queensland Centre for Domestic and Family Violence Research, will host visiting speaker Professor Cathy Humphreys, Alfred Felton Chair of Child and Family Welfare, University of Melbourne, this Friday, December 7, from 11am to 12 noon at CQU Mackay.

    (The presentation will also be video-linked to 18 sites across Queensland including, Cairns, Mareeba, Townsville, Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Gladstone, Emerald, Mt Isa, Longreach, Nambour, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Toowoomba, Roma and St George.

    CQU Gold Coast students were welcomed to Term 3 with an Australian wildlife presentation.

    Students had the opportunity to step outside their comfort zone and get up close and personal with a variety of native species.

  • Ethical overhaul needed for accountants

    Accounting firms will need to adhere to new ethical standards and policies if a CQU researcher's recommendations to Certified Practicing Accountants (CPA) Australia are upheld.

    CPA Australia has awarded Dr Soheila Mirshekary a $6500 research grant to complete her project titled "Ethical Climates and the Ethical Decision Making of SMEs (Accounting Firms) in Australia" which aims to develop a set of ethics for young accountants and strengthen the ethical code for auditors.

  • CQU moves to reorganise international operations

    The Council of Central Queensland University (CQU) unanimously resolved that CQU would take measures to acquire full ownership of its international business activities and wind-down its 13-year-old commercial joint venture, C_MS, the education management company it co-owns with Sydney-based Global Campus Management (GCM), it was announced today.

    "This has been an incredibly successful partnership, but both organisations - CQU and GCM - have concluded that our individual strategic directions have diverged and it's time to move on," said CQU Vice Chancellor and President John Rickard.

  • Water centre awarded - CQU role acknowledged

    The International Centre of Excellence in Water Resources Management (ICE WaRM) - of which CQU is a member - has won another major national business and education award for its innovative professional development programs.

    ICE WaRM has been handed the Business/Higher Education Round Table's (B-HERT) 2007 Award for Outstanding International Collaboration in Education and Training for its ground-breaking professional development program with China's Yellow River Conservancy Commission (YRCC).

  • Alumnus heads Australian Computer Society

    CQU Alumnus Kumar Parakala, who graduated with an Master of Information Systems in the early 1990s, has just been elected national President of the Australian Computer Society (ACS).

    Mr Parakala, who is now Global Chief Operating Officer, IRM, KPMG Risk Advisory Services Pty Limited, is based in Sydney.
