Rough diamonds return to their roots for CQ gigs

It is a tale oft-told.  Musicians move to capital city to make good on their hopes and dreams and take their music to a bigger world.  Such is the tale of two local musicians now known as Transvaal Diamond Syndicate (TDS).

Rockhampton's Christian Tryhorn and Tim Price moved to Brisbane a year ago in the hope of turning their talents, ambition and hard work into something marketable.

And it seems the pair is on track. TDS received a highly commended at the 2010 Q-Song Music Awards for Behind That Smile. Last month their single Home was listed as the 8th top song in Australia, as requested by community radio DJs, and it was listed as number 2 on the blues list.

PhotoID:9594Recently teaming up with friend and sax player, Matthew Barker, the once CQUniversity students say they are happy with TDS' progress and feel they are making a dent in the bigger music scene down in Brisbane.

With a foot-stomping, hard hittin' blues/rock sound, TDS comes from a place of blood, sweat, tears and hardship - rough, raw and unclean. And critics have compared them to larger Aussie acts Dan Sultan and The Fumes.

With their new EP Diamonds and Dust ready to hit the airwaves, TDS are heading back to Central Queensland for a sequel to their hugely successful Homeward Bound tour - Back to CQ Roots Tour.

As part of the tour TDS will be performing at this year's Village Festival in Yeppoon on Saturday September 18 on the Coowoonga Stage from 8pm. See http://www.thevillagefestival.org.au/ for Tickets .

They will perform alongside artists such as Chase the Sun, Dubmarine, Marshall and the Fro, A French Butler called Smith and Rockhampton friends Busby Marou.

Amongst other dates, the tour will cover Bundaberg at the Club Hotel on Friday September 17 at 8pm and the Caves Pub, north of Rockhampton, on Sunday September 19 at 2.30pm.

Not only has TDS a strong connection with the region, they also have had a long affiliation with CQUniversity.

PhotoID:9595Christian studied Human Movement Science and Education degrees through the University and later worked in the marketing department. It was during this time he began performing live as an acoustic musician. He first performed at the Village Festival back in 2008 before heading to Brisbane to further his music career. He now works in Student Services at QUT and runs a small-scale music recording and marketing company.

Tim studied an education degree through CQUniversity and later began forging his links with the music industry, booking bands at O'Dowds in Rocky and later through the Council's A-Venue initiative, where he was responsible for bringing a number of high profile acts to Rocky. Since moving to Brisbane he has worked for a digital music distribution company as well as a music management company.

Matthew studied a music degree through CQUniversity's Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music. He has since moved south and has made music his full-time career, performing 3 - 4 gigs per week across a wide range of genres. Primarily a sax player (which he plays for TDS), Matt is a versatile musician who also can be heard on vocals, guitar and percussion. He has featured on a number of album releases in the past year.
