Dreams come true for mum and daughter

It will be a dream come true for mother of 4 Suzanne Anstey when she becomes a university graduate alongside her eldest daughter Grace tonight in Rockhampton.

After 26 years out of the classroom Suzanne was initially apprehensive about pursuing a university degree, but after completing CQUniversity's preparatory program STEPS (Skills for Tertiary Education Preparatory Studies) back in 2000 she gained new confidence in herself and enrolled to study a Bachelor of Psychology part-time.

"This proved to be the best decision I could make," Suzanne said.

Five years later, her daughter Grace enrolled in a Learning Management (Early Childhood) degree, allowing the mother and daughter to study and now graduate at the same time.

"It has been an exciting and memorable experience for both of us. I am anticipating that we will both be feeling a sense of pride, not only as fellow students but as mother and daughter, as we are called to receive our testamur.

"It will be a special time for us both," Suzanne said.

Grace said she has found the study experience rewarding.

"I found studying at the same time as mum extremely helpful as we were able to share the different experiences of our courses with each other."

It was not always easy for Suzanne, raising a family and studying, but with the help of her family she has been able to fulfil her dream.

She becomes the fourth sibling in her family to graduate with a university qualification, all inspired by their father Ray Boyle who at the age of 78 is completing his PhD at CQUniversity.

Suzanne will graduate with a Bachelor of Psychology with Second Class Honours, Division B, and Grace will receive a Bachelor of Learning Management (Early Childhood) with Distinction.

Suzanne is in the process of looking for employment while Grace is now teaching prep and grade 1.
