Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Professor Bowman was speaking this week (Dec 15) before presenting a series of awards recognising staff achievements.

Professor Rob Reed was presented with the Award for Teaching Excellence for the Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Health, worth $1000. Judith Brown (Mackay) and Helen Holden (Bundaberg) will accept their Awards for Teaching Excellence on a later occasion.

Accepting Special Merit Award certificates on behalf of staff at Navigate CQUni were Mark Kennedy (Course Information Centre); Kylie Toon (Student Business Centre); Jason Bailey (Student Contact Centre) and Roslyn McCarthy (Student Support Centre).

Staff Service Awards (15 years) were presented to: Kerry Comollattie (Financial Services Division); Kim Gohdes  (Faculty of Sciences, Engineering & Health);  Mark Kennedy (Navigate CQUni); Peter Lawrence (Corporate Communications); Jaron Stidiford (Division of Library & Academic Learning Services); Janet West (Faculty of Arts, Business, Informatics & Education).

A Staff Service Award (25 years) was presented to Karen Reynolds  (Division of Human Resources). Bundaberg staff to receive service awards (Dec 17) will include David Draney, Anna Meloury and Karen Seary. Anne O'Shea and Denise Tomlin have achieved service awards but won't be at the function. Gladstone staff to receive service awards in the New Year will include Maria Madsen and Karin Simon.

The Vice-Chancellor's Award for Excellence to General Staff (EXCEL Award development grant of $2500has been won by Jo Rees, for consistently producing high quality research data and analysis in her capacity as the Senior Brand and Marketing Research Officer in the Division of Marketing.

Jo's input informs the University of  market/product alignment, market demand and market trends in regard to student recruitment. Her extensive research and engagement with internal and external stakeholders has led to the development of a valuable reporting tool to provide comprehensive analysis of the University's marketing activities. She also played a significant role in the finalisation of an engagement commitment and partnership between CQUniversity and the Queensland Resources Council (QRC) with the recent launch of the QRC Engineering Scholarship. Jo's award will be presented at an appropriate event in Gladstone in the New Year.

The Customer Service Award (a development grant of $1000) has been won by Susan Praed, for conscientiously undertaking her duties in a capable and collegial manner, and for consistently providing excellent customer service. The Award recognises Susan's excellent treatment of, and positive attitude towards, colleagues and customers in her role as Administrative Officer. Her colleagues in the School of Computing Sciences, the Faculty of Arts, Business, Informatics and Education and the wider University community describe her as an outstanding employee.  Susan's friendly and helpful attitude, together with her conscientiousness and efficiency, is commendable and this award is confirmation of the high esteem in which she is regarded. This Award will be presented during an appropriate event in Bundaberg.
