Queensland's Outback Barbarians rugby union players are heading off on their tour of Amercia's west coast with sponsorship assistance from CQU's Office of Development and Graduate Relations.

They will play a series of teams based at American universities over a 3-week period in April and May.

Two players - Simon Steinhofer and Murray Brookes - are recent graduates and another graduate, Geoff Barton, is manager/coach for the tour.

All 3 dropped into CQU Rockhampton recently to show off the CQU logos on their distinctive pink team shirts.

CQU's Suzi Blair, Director of Development and Graduate Relations, said the University was backing the Outback Barbarians:

"Because we like to support our graduates with their efforts to build community and make a difference.

"Sport is very important to a lot of people and as a major stakeholder in the region CQU assists sporting and community organisations by providing expertise, facilities and resources," Ms Blair said.

Mr Barton said the team would fly to America on April 18 and faced their first game in Spokane (Washington State) before travelling to Missoula in Montana for the MaggotFest competition (named after a local rugby team and famous for its wild carnival atmosphere).

"There will be 28 male teams and 8 female teams competing," he said.

The team will continue on to play a university team at West Yellowstone and then the Las Vegas Blackjacks, followed by the San Diego Old Aztecs .
