Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

The firm of more than 70 chartered accountants, business advisors, financial planners, stockbrokers and administrative staff has provided employment opportunities to many CQUniversity graduates such as Katrina Cislowski, Gemma O'Shanesy, Belinda Rossiter, Paula Swift, Duncan Ruthenberg, Donna Doss, Stacey Herbert, Deanne Shield, Shane Portener and Jasmine Voges.

Meanwhile, current students Joseph Marles, Mitchell Hooper, Justin Kenneday, Fiona Lawson, Joshua Dick and Leesa Courtice at Ulton's Bundaberg office and Aimee Petrinec at the Gladstone office are already part of the Ulton team, while completing their CQUniversity degrees part-time.

Those employed by Ulton have studied across a range of fields including accounting, professional communication, marketing, business, information technology and information systems.

Ulton's HR Manager, Maree Pengelly, said: "We find that CQUniversity students and graduates are not only academically proficient, they also bring a number of other attributes to the team, such as high quality interpersonal and organisational skills, the ability to successfully prioritise their work and an eagerness to apply their technical knowledge to practical workplace situations".
