CQU-sponsored rugby team the Outback Barbarians have been a hit on their tour of the United States, with TV appearances, comprehensive victories and trophies coming their way.

Tour wins so far have included a 75-6 victory over the Spokane Razorbacks and a 25-0 victory over the Missoula Maggots. The Outback boys also recorded a gutsy come-from-behind performance to defeat the Las Vegas Black Jacks 26-17 in Las Vegas.

The Barbarians have also gained the 'most honoured' trophy for their "attitude, sportmanship and party skills" during the light-hearted Missoula Maggot Fest, a 2-day celebration of rugby and rugby camaraderie involving 40 teams from America and Canada.

CQU's Office of Development and Graduate Relations has provided sponsorship in recognition that 2 players - Simon Steinhofer and Murray Brookes - are recent graduates and another graduate, Geoff Barton, is manager/coach for the tour.

CQU's Suzi Blair, Director of Development and Graduate Relations, said the University was backing the Outback Barbarians:

"Because we like to support our graduates with their efforts to build community and make a difference.

"Sport is very important to a lot of people and as a major stakeholder in the region CQU assists sporting and community organisations by providing expertise, facilities and resources," Ms Blair said.

The Barbarians flew to America on April 18 and faced their first game in Spokane (Washington State) before travelling to Missoula in Montana for the MaggotFest competition.

The team continued on to play a university team at West Yellowstone and then the Las Vegas Blackjacks, followed by the San Diego Old Aztecs .
