Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

  • Mental health coordinators hosted on campuses

    Newly appointed regional mental health coordinators will be based on campus in Rockhampton and Mackay, giving them a 'neutral space' as they deal with dozens of agencies in the community.

    CQUniversity's Institute for Health and Social Science is looking forward to hosting the new coordinators, as Institute Director Professor Brenda Happell anticipates opportunities for research and collaboration.

  • Super turnout of research supervisors

    Around 100 research supervisors from campuses spread from Mackay to Melbourne converged for a two-day conference in Rockhampton this week (Nov 15-16).

    Organised by the Office of Research and led by Research and Research Training Dean Associate Professor Lorna Moxham with input from other senior researchers, the conference started out with the fundamentals of how research higher degrees 'work'.

    Professor Matthew Marshall is Dean of the School of Creative and Performing Arts at Central Queensland University, Australia.

    Prior to his appointment at CQU Matthew was Director of Performance at the New Zealand School of Music in Wellington 2007-2009, Visiting Professor of Music at the University of Plymouth, UK from 2006-2009, Director of Music at Dartington College of Arts, UK 2006-2007, and Head of the Conservatorium of Music at Massey University in Wellington, New Zealand 1996-2006.

    Patron of the Staff Graduate Network, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (University Services) Alastair Dawson recently hosted lunches in Bundaberg (Nov 5) and Mackay (Nov 10) for staff graduates of the University.

    During the lunches, Alastair provided a short presentation on his career journey and key points to great leadership and he discussed and answered questions about the future direction of the campuses.

    CQUniversity has been leading Australia's involvement in a global project designed to establish whether the 'costs' of occupational health and safety (OHS) are in fact an economic benefit.

    The global project organisers argue that prevention work follows legal and/or social requirements but also has a cost-benefit dimension.

    His English teacher, Claire Sinclair recommended the Aviation Theory course at CQUniversity Bundaberg through the SUN (Start Uni Now) program.

  • Early Childhood students 'play' on Cup theme

    Last week's Melbourne Cup was also 'run' at the Quay Street Rockhampton precinct of CQUniversity, complete with horses, jockeys silks, sparkly punch and a fashion parade.

    The Cup was recreated by the Bachelor of Learning Management Early Childhood students from Rockhampton and Gladstone.
