Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

    Indian engineering student Ashutosh Srivastava said the chance to work on a research project at Central Queensland University's Process Engineering and Light Metals (PELM) Centre was a dream come true.

    A 'Con in the cane fields' might seem an unlikely place for 4 Sydney Nirimba TAFE graduates but the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music (CQCM) in the Queensland regional town of Mackay is providing opportunities as unique as its boxy, modern buildings for students undertaking the Bachelor of Music Theatre - the only program of its kind in Australia.

    Hearing about the Con through their TAFE lecturer and graduate of the Con, Sarah Matthews-Libke; provided that much-needed next step according to Zoe Harvey, Liam Cameron, Brett O'Neill and Casey Eidintas as they near the completion of their first semester of study.

    Fiji-based CQU alumnus Avnit Narayan is Midcity Plaza's contestant for the 2007 Hibiscus King crown and wants to raise awareness on HIV/AIDS, which he believes is the biggest threat to Fiji.

    That is according to an article in The Fiji Times this week (July 11) which says the 25-year-old believes his participation in the 2007 Vodafone Hibiscus contest is a great opportunity to highlight the issues.

  • Trainee teachers can boost language proficiency

    The Endeavour Language Teacher Fellowships (ELTF) are an Australian Government initiative which offer practising and trainee (pre-service) language teachers an opportunity to improve their language proficiency and cultural knowledge through an intensive, short-term study program.

    In 2008, programs will be offered for trainee teachers of Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and Bahasa Indonesia in Jordan, China, Japan, and Darwin respectively.

    Graduate Careers Australia (GCA) is a not-for-profit organisation that tracks the activities of new university graduates, reporting annually on their employment destinations and starting salaries via the Australian Graduate Survey.

    In order to better inform students and the higher education sector, GCA is undertaking an innovative new survey of university students, titled 'University and Beyond'.

    CQU Professor Bob Miles has just completed a consultancy role for the United Nations 7th Global Forum on Reinventing Government, which took place at United Nations Headquarters in Vienna from June 26 to 29.
