Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

    A team of academics from CQU’s School of Nursing and Health Studies has been successful in receiving a Queensland Nursing Council grant to undertake an emotional intelligence project.

    The project, “Development of emotional intelligence in nursing undergraduate students”, has been applauded by Head of School, Dr Lorna Moxham.

    A symposium held at CQU Gladstone this week was an opportunity for 4 Process Engineering and Light Metals research students to network with fellow researchers and industry representatives from around the country.

    The symposium was organised by the Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (CSRP) as a forum for PhD, Masters and Honours students studying within the minerals and energy sector.

  • Cycling study checks performance benefits of compression tights

    CQU will soon begin research into the actual performance benefits of compression tights, building on other studies showing they have physical benefits.

    The CQU study will be the first in Australia to use a Near Infra-Red Spectroscopy (NIRS) device to examine the consumption of oxygen within the thigh muscles of athletes wearing the tights.

  • High school students connect with university life

    About 25 Central Queensland high school students were given their first taste of university life during CQU Connections Uni Experience from Monday June 26 to Friday June 30.

    Rockhampton students were joined by students from as far afield as Blackall, Clermont, Mackay, Bundaberg, Rosedale, Yeppoon and Monto for the week-long program designed to encourage students from under-represented socio-economic backgrounds to include university study as a viable option in their future.

    American recreation studies student Justin Lopez wanted to become more culturally aware by studying in Australia and he certainly has achieved that.

    Among a number of tourism and health-related courses, Justin enrolled in Indigenous studies through Nulloo Yumbah, CQU’s Centre for Indigenous Learning, Spirituality and Research.

    The Bachelor of Learning Management In 2001 Central Queensland University introduced a new Teacher Education degree, the Bachelor of Learning Management (BLM). The BLM was promoted as the first innovation in teacher education in 25 years and brought with it a shift from the traditional university experience, supported by student teachers undertaking various practicum experiences, to a much stronger partnership with the teaching profession.
