Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

  • Nursing graduate snaps up New Inventors award

    Congratulations to CQU Nursing graduate Glen Riverstone who last night (Wednesday Nov 28) won the People's Choice category of the New Inventors Grand Final on ABC TV for his SNAPIT device, designed to enhance safety in hospitals.

    As part of his prize, the young inventor won a trip to Hong Kong next month to visit the Innovation Design and Technology Expo.

  • Australia's first river story flows through 'Source to Sea'

    The Bundaberg Media Research Group will launch a 2-year project that for the first time in Australia records the Indigenous story of a complete river system, on Saturday December 1 at 4pm at Alexandra Park in Bundaberg.

    'Source to Sea: Stories of Burnett River Country' follows the Burnett River, Queensland, and captures the stories and sounds of thousands of years of the river country from the top of the freshwater to the saltwater country on the coast.

  • Graduate has brush with Beckham, sweeps up football award

    It's been a huge week for CQU Bachelor of Business graduate Mark Shield, who is now a leading football (soccer) referee.

    Mr Shield was in the limelight on Tuesday night when he yellow-carded David Beckham and also awarded the free kick which turned into a Beckham special in front of 80,000 fans at Telstra Stadium and a worldwide TV audience.

  • Rockhampton's Ethnic Language Project success celebrated

    Rockhampton's Ethnic Language Project supporters and participants have gathered to celebrate success in establishing a future for the initiative.

    Project spokesperson Rema Dhanasekar said the initiative has been led by a team at Central Queensland University, in conjunction with the Central Queensland Multicultural Association  (CQMA), Rockhampton City Council (RCC) and the Nurturing Migrant Project (NMP).

    CQU's Dr Karl Neuenfeldt is guest editor for the current edition of World of Music, the Journal of the Department of Ethnomusicology, Otto-Friedrich-University of Bamberg.

    Dr Neuenfeldt, based at CQU Bundaberg, has also contributed 2 articles:

    'Notes on the Engagement of Indigenous Peoples with Recording Technology and Techniques, the Recording Industry and Researchers'.

  • Mackay campus hub for Master of Contemporary Arts degree

    CQU Mackay has become a hub for delivery of the Master of Contemporary Arts degree offered by the University of Tasmania's Visual and Performing Arts (Academy of the Arts).

    Head of Campus Dr Trevor Davison said arrangements were in place for MCA students to use CQU Mackay videoconference facilities and the campus will host visits by Academy academics each term.

  • Julie realises childhood dream through STEPS

    Julie Robson has turned her life around through the STEPS program at Central Queensland University (CQU) Mackay and it's landed her in a career she had long forgotten was her childhood dream.

    Julie entered the STEPS program as she believed it was time to get a formal qualification in Accounting after years of working in accounts and book keeping.

  • Emerald hosts library network members

    Members of the Central Highlands Library Network met recently at CQU Emerald's Library for their final meeting of the year.

    The teacher librarians, librarians and library aides from high schools, primary schools, distance education, the Australian Agricultural College, Shire libraries and the University Campus meet 4 times per year to network for resource sharing, professional development, information literacy initiatives and technology updates.

  • Founding father Goldston passes on

    One of the founding fathers of CQU, James Goldston AO, passed on recently.

    He was a pillar of the Central Queensland University Development Association (UDA), which first met in 1959 and laid the ground for an institution of higher education to be established in Rockhampton.
