Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

    Queensland Cup English language competition winner Kang Liting (Shirley) visited CQU Brisbane International Campus from August 14-21 as part of her prize won in China.

    Excelling among more than 100 competition entrants (winning 3 rounds of competitions in Shanghai including a written test, speech and a debate), Shirley came to CQU with a high level of English ability.

  • Elder's death at airstrip: research exposes deeper issues

    The death of an Aboriginal elder, who was left to die at a remote airstrip in the Northern Territory after treatment at Katherine Hospital, came as no surprise to NHMRC (National Health & Medical Research Council) Senior Research Fellow, Dr Pam McGrath, who conducted a study of palliative care services for Indigenous Australians in the Northern Territory from 2002 until 2004.

    “This tragedy sadly confirms the findings from our research,” said Dr McGrath, who is also Director of the International Program for Psychosocial Health Research (IPP-SHR) at Central Queensland University.

    Around 150 school students visited CQU Bundaberg recently for the 2006 Bundaberg District Science Industry Forum.

    The forum was organised by Bundaberg State High School's Science Department Head Dr Richard Mann and was officially opened by CQU Sub-Dean, Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Health, Ms Desirae Kirby.

    Central Queensland University is now the largest educator of full-degree international students studying within Australia, based on enrolments. That is according to IDP Education Australia figures for this year's Term 1 intakes which show the Rockhampton-based University now has 10 119 full-degree international students on its Australian campuses (which include Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast).

    Changes in water quality and the array of seaweeds and seagrasses could be useful in tracking the effects of rapid development on the Capricorn Coast.

    That is according to Central Queensland University researcher Mary-Anne Jones, who is focusing her PhD study to establish baseline data on water quality and the array of seaweeds and seagrasses on the coast.
