Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

  • Research into future housing options

    The Institute for Sustainable Regional Development will commence surveying the residents of Moura, Theodore and Biloela as part of a research project titled ‘Ensuring Sustainable Benefits from Boom Periods: A Case Study for a Long-Term Housing Policy in the Bowen Basin'.

    The research aims to identify how new projects in the Bowen Basin region will impact on housing and labour markets, and to identify preferred options for housing market development.

  • Niral can become youngest to complete Masters at CQU

    India's Niral Joshi can become the youngest student yet to complete a Masters degree at CQU, when he wraps up work on his postgraduate Management (Marketing) qualification at CQU Brisbane International Campus in October this year.

    He's already gained the honour of completing his Bachelor of Business (Marketing) degree via CQU Sydney International Campus at the age of 18, in July last year.

  • Baptism in jazz a revelation for student drummer

    Regional Queenslander Alex Nesevski has been able to gain a baptism in American jazz, complete with immersion in gospel music and sermons from the most-righteous high priests of the movement - Chick, Bobby, Jack and John.

    Thanks to a student exchange arranged through Central Queensland University, his journey to the University of Louisville Jazz School was replete with learning experiences.

  • New 4WD code to protect turtles, birds

    Researchers from CQU's Centre for Environmental Management have developed a 4WD Code of Practice in conjunction with 4WD vehicle users to help protect key species using beaches, such as nesting shorebirds and turtles.

    These species use coastal resources (dunes, beaches and wetlands) as feeding, roosting and nesting grounds and are susceptible to human disturbance as many people undertake activities on the beach as well.

  • CQU helps to recognise Aboriginal elder at national level

    A Central Queensland champion for Aboriginal issues, Bob Muir has been selected as a finalist for ‘Elder of the Year' in this year's national NAIDOC Week awards.

    Informed recently of his selection, Mr Muir said he was unaware of the application put forward by Central Queensland University and was humbled by being considered worthy of inclusion in this prestigious award.

  • Gladstone graduation includes award for former Mayor

    CQU Gladstone's latest graduation ceremony (Thursday, May 22) included a special award for a long-time supporter of the University and community.

    CQU conferred the Honorary Award of Companion of the University on former long-serving Mayor Peter Corones during the ceremony at the Gladstone Entertainment Centre.
