Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

  • Multimedia student wins leadership award

    Banana State School teacher aide and CQU multimedia student Julie Hanack has won a district award in the Commonwealth Bank Showcase Awards for Excellence in Leadership.

    Ms Hanack gained the award after being seconded to the Priority Country Area Program (PCAP) and offering workshops to school staff and community members in the Callide and Dawson district.

    The project is the culmination of a decade of work by Dr Pam McGrath documenting the psycho-social aspects of haematological treatments.

    CQU International was recently awarded full ISO 9001:2000 certification, following the successful implementation and audit of its Quality Management System.

    The auditor noted that the staff possessed the 'unusual attribute of understanding the big picture', while being able to 'focus on the fine details of implementation'.

    Facilities Management has organised a garden naming ceremony in memory of former groundsperson Vic Sinclair (1979 - 2000).

    Vic was a very happy, helpful, unassuming person with a great sense of humour who left a lasting impression on many CQU staff.

  • CQU member of new international centre of excellence in water resources management

    CQU has become an equal member in a consortium known as the International Centre of Excellence in Water Resources Management.

    Professor Bob Miles, Executive Director of CQU\'s Institute for Sustainable Regional Development, said CQU was the only northern Australia entity in the consortium, giving it a window of opportunity to handle the dry tropical water dimension.

  • Pythons, rats and parasites part of Phd study

    PhD student Eridani Mulder will be travelling from her home in Rockhampton to the Northern Territory in August as part of her research into endoparasites of water pythons and dusky rats on a monsoonal floodplain of the Northern Territory.

    Eridani's interest in Australian reptiles, ecology and parasitology inspired her to commence a PhD in field-based biology in March 2003.

  • Sabrina flies out to entomology conference

    Masters of Applied Science Marine Biology and Entomology student Sabrina Hall will present a poster detailing her research for the first time at the 22nd International Congress of Entomology Conference, due to be held in Brisbane between August 15 and 21.

    Sabrina's poster will focus on the fly species responsible for infestations of marine turtle nests and the effects their larvae are having on turtle nest productivity.
