Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

    Central Queensland University was fined $7000 this month (Friday April 11)  as a result of a "misunderstanding" of its obligations under its Collective Agreement with employees.

    The Federal Court ruled in a case brought by the NTEU, following a decision made last year by the Australian Industrial Relations Commission which found CQU had not followed a consultative condition of its enterprise agreement.

    Three CQU representatives were awarded when they attended the recent Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) - Near Infra-red Spectroscopy Group conference in Hamilton, Victoria, during April.

    CQU postgraduate student Ria Reyes took out a student award, postdoctoral fellow Phul Subedi took out the best poster award and Professor Kerry Walsh was presented with the overall award.

    CQU Rockhampton has been hosting a group of Chinese scholars who have helped with Mandarin language community classes and forged links for future academic projects.

    Associate Professor Qing Liu (known as Julie) - at CQU for 12 months up to August this year - is Director of an English College in the Foreign Language Department of Northwest A & F University in Yangling, Shanxi.

  • Human Movement Science student gains Indigenous scholarship

    Congratulations to CQU Rockhampton Human Movement Science student Sherry-Kaye Savage on being selected for an Indigenous Youth Leadership Program (IYLP) Tertiary Scholarship of $6000 per annum for a period of 2 years, commencing in 2008.

    The IYLP aims to create opportunities for young Indigenous people who have demonstrated academic excellence and potential leadership capability, with the support of both family and community.

  • Geisha walk among tour highlights for education student

    CQU education student Petrina Zagami says that dressing in a kimono and walking down the streets of Gion - where the trainee geishas live - were among the highlights of her recent visit to Japan.

    Ms Zagami, a Rockhampton resident who attended The Range and Emmaus colleges, has been studying Japanese as part of her Bachelor of Learning Management (Japanese) at CQU.

    CQU is a silver sponsor for the second annual 'Big Wrap for Nurses' - the Sunshine Coast event (on May 4), which kicks off a week of celebrations for International Nurses' Day. 

    The Noosa Hub nursing team is once again supporting the Regional Nursing Solutions event, donating the trophy for the Golden Bed Pan race segment and entering a team for the race.
