BMC and CQUni helping more students build their career

Six allied health students from Nebo, Moranbah, Marian, Cannonvale, Clermont and Mackay have been provided with a great start to their university experience thanks to BHP Billiton Mitsui Coal Pty Ltd (BMC) and CQUniversity.

The BMC ‘Building My Career' Scholarships provide students with free accommodation and meals at the new student residence at the Mackay Campus. The support is worth $60,000 to $80,000 per student for the duration of their studies.

They recently joined last year's scholarship students, now in their second year, for a meet and greet with BMC representatives including Asset President Michael Rosengren and Principal Community Advisor Jessica Simpson, CEO of Mackay Whitsunday Regional Economic Development Corporation Narelle Pearse and CQUniversity's Pro Vice-Chancellor (Community & Engagement) and Head of Campus Mackay Professor Pierre Viljoen.

BMC Asset President Michael Rosengren said the scholarships enable students to access world-class facilities at their local university with minimal impact to their budget.

"BMC understands that a potential challenge to attending university for school leavers in the Bowen Basin can be the cost of living away from home," Michael said.

"I am proud that these scholarships are continuing to encourage young people to study locally and, upon completion of their studies, use their skills to benefit the region."

CQUniversity's Pro Vice-Chancellor (Community & Engagement) and Head of Campus Mackay Professor Pierre Viljoen said he was pleased to see local students benefiting from the scholarships.

"We are grateful for BMC's support in helping local students receive a good quality education. It is great to see the students are studying programs that will benefit Mackay and its surrounding regions when they become fully qualified professionals."
