Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

  • World real estate award success draws on PhD research

    Midell Developments, the company behind the Sunrise at 1770 project, has gained a first runner-up placing in the international FIABCI Prix d'Excellence Awards* for real estate developments.

    This follows the company's finalist status in the 2008 United Nations Association of Australia World Environment Day Awards and its status as the Best Sustainable Development in Australia 2008 (judged by the Urban Development Institute of Australia).

  • Nancarrow joins expert panel to stamp out domestic violence

    The Queensland Government has announced an expert Death Review Panel, in an effort to identify gaps in services for victims of domestic and family violence and to prevent further deaths in the future.

    Premier Anna Bligh said the panel will investigate the circumstances surrounding domestic violence-related deaths over the past 5 years as well as examine any new cases as they arise in the future.

    Five prominent Queenslanders have been appointed to a new panel that will review domestic violence related-deaths.

    Community Services Minister Karen Struthers said the Death Review Panel offered Queensland a new way to try and prevent similar deaths in the future.

    The final figure for the annual Rockhampton Relay for Life is in and it's all good news for beneficiary Cancer Council Queensland.

    The 114 teams assembled at the event held on CQUniversity Rockhampton Campus (May 30-31) have raised a grand total of $255,358 and 60 cents.

    The CQUniversity-sponsored ROCKon Music Summit, including seminars, workshops and performances, runs from Friday through to Sunday at various venues.

    Friday's release of a credit report by Queensland Treasury on the financial situation of CQUniversity Australia forecast a shortfall in expected resources available to fund the University's operations beyond 2011.

    That does not mean CQUniversity is closing.

    The Queensland Treasury Corporation (QTC) Review of the Financial Viability of CQUniversity Australia, a combined assessment conducted in partnership with the University and the Queensland and Australian departments of Education, has been presented to the University.

    In it the QTC concludes that the University's operations are considered riskier than some other Universities because of its historic reliance on international student operations, diseconomies of scale associated with the University's operations across regional Queensland - which by their nature disadvantage [the university] both in terms of operations and in delivering course content - and inadequate Commonwealth funding.

  • Students gain medal at Uni Games

    The Northern University Games were contested on the Sunshine Coast in early July.

    A total of 14 students from CQUniversity Rockhampton competed in Mixed Beach Touch, Beach Volleyball (men's) and Women's Netball.
