Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

  • Study checks impact of stormwater drains on crabs and mangroves

    A study by PhD student Derek Ball is checking whether the concentration of rainwater at single points of mangrove communities, caused by urban development and altered stormwater drainage patterns, is reducing the number of grapsid crabs.

    These crabs are considered a key to the health of the mangroves through leaf removal and processing.

  • Saxophone project takes Aussie composer to China

    A commission to compose a concerto for World Saxophone Congress featured performer Alan Yang* will enable Australian composer Kevin Purcell to tour China to conduct the work.

    Dr Purcell, the new Professor and Director of Music & Performing Arts at Central Queensland University, has been commissioned to compose the concerto in the style of the Butterfly Concerto for violin.

  • Keppel corals form new heat-beating partnerships

    CQU researchers are involved in the first observation of its kind - a coral community in the southern inshore region of the Great Barrier Reef is showing signs of adjusting to higher sea surface temperature by quickly changing its main algal partners to types that can better cope with the heat.

    University PhD student Alison Jones (lead author) and researcher Dr Billy Sinclair (contributor) have helped produce a new publication about the observation.

  • Companies recruit at Graduate Careers Fair

    Hundreds of students took the opportunity to attend the 2nd annual Graduate Careers Fair, hosted by CQU Rockhampton as part of the National Careers Fair Circuit, on Tuesday, March 18 at the CQ Sports Complex.

    Around 60 companies across all industries and disciplines were recruiting CQU students for graduate work and vacation employment as well as promoting student scholarships, internships, cadetships and work-integrated learning.

    That is according to a recent report by Hobsons, the editor and publisher of Australia's only university ratings publication, The Good Universities Guide.

    For the sixth consecutive year, the University will provide the venue and infrastructure support for Relay.

    Program coordinator Robyn Smith said the 'fully flex' course could be studied on-line from anywhere and was proving just as popular with industry leaders as with school leaders.
